 Reducing economic vulnerability in Nele

"Women are empowered by the Red Cross intervention in Nele," said Sarada Karki, president of Sagarmatha Women Saving Group of Nele Village Development Committee Ward No 7. There are now 34 members in her group who collect fifty rupees every month. There is 68,632 rupees collected which is invested among the group members for running any micro-economic activities in the community.

The members are active in solving any social disputes, renovation of temples and other public structures and educating women for their rights. They fine 200 to 500 rupees to anyone who disturb in the village after having alcohol and then leave them to the police post. The group also runs a sanitation campaign every month. The Nepal Red Cross Society Community Development Project (CDP) provided this Group leadership, group management and account keeping trainings.

The family members of Sita Basnet, 50, of Kangel- 8, Solukhumbu, have green vegetables every day which is the product of her own kitchen garden. The family rarely had green vegetables in their diet before Ms. Basnet got kitchen garden training in her own village. They did not know the use of the vegetable keeps one healthy.

She now plants tomato, cabbage, cauliflower, onion, garlic, and beans in her kitchen garden. The land before she got the training was used for planting corn. She sometimes sells her vegetables in a nearby market and buys household goods. She also plants some sunflower plants which she uses to produce oil. She also encourages to her neighbors to plant vegetables.

Her family now looks active and healthy. "We have rarely gone to a health clinic for our treatment after we began to use green vegetables in our diet," said Sita Basnet to the journalist of Nepal Samacharpatra, a national daily. Her family members eat nutritious food these days even if they have fever. "We used to go to health clinics several times a year before we were conscious about our health," she added.

 NRCS completed the 38th GA

Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS) completed its 38th General Assembly (GA) from 22 to 23 April 2009 in Dhanagadhi where 271 representatives of 71 district chapters actively participated in. The GA was hosted by Kailali district chapter in the support of the national headquarters.

"We can obtain peace with the service of humanity," said Subash Nemwang, Chairman of the Constituent Assembly opening the grand event. "Nepal Red Cross has provided humanitarian services to those affected by disasters which help promote peace and harmony in the communities," he added.

Mr. Nemwang was the chief guest of the opening ceremony which was attended by Red Cross volunteers and staff, RC Movement partners, civil society, security personals, government authorities of the district, local leaders of the political parties, heads of the local organizations, students and the media persons.

 RC Movement Partners in Kathmandu appealed to make a move

In Nepal, the Red Cross Movement Partners- Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS), International Federation (IFRC) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), jointly observed the World Red Cross Day in Kathmandu on 8 May 2009 by organizing stage programme, rally, blood donation, street theatre and first aid simulation. About 3,000 RC youth, volunteers and staff gathered in Kathmandu for a common goal to tribute to the contribution of the tens of thousand of volunteers, following the legacy of Jean Henry Dunant, the philanthropist and the founder of Red Cross.

Programmes were held across the country by the NRCS regional committees, district chapters and sub-chapters to observe the Day by organizing rallies, poem competition, blood donations, street theatre and stage shows to pass messages to the general public especially the youths and volunteers for collective action.

Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS) and the South Asia Regional Delegation (SARD) of the International Federation jointly organised an induction course on Regional Disaster Response Team (RDRT) for women from 4 to 13 May 2009 in Kathmandu. Twenty female participants from six South Asian countries- Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka are participating in the training.

The main objective of the course is to establish gender-balanced RDRT system in the SA. “This is the first time this kind of course is ever organized in the South Asia probably globally, which is extremely helpful to change the male-dominated disaster response system in the region,” said Ms. Andrea Reisinger, representative of IFRC in Nepal, during the opening ceremony.

The 29th National Junior/Youth Red Cross Conference concluded greatly to involve the juniors and youths in policy making and further enhance their role in the organisation.

Following a review of achievements in 2008, the Conference passed a seven point resolution declaring Abhukhairani Declaration 2009 as: i. conducting programmes for Our World Your Move Campaign 2009 ii. creating awareness among juniors and youths on global burning issues iii. refraining junior youths from political activities iv. providing relief to the family of the RC volunteers if they have any loss during service v. working for integrating RC knowledge in the school curriculum vi. continuing campaign to raise one rupee from each RC member for the national Junior/Youth fund and vii. collecting voices from circles to ensure juniors/youth involvement.

 Over six thousand victims of fire benefited by RC relief

Above 7,000 people of about 1,200 families of 17 districts are affected by fire this year. The assessment shows that 890 houses are completely destroyed, 40 persons are injured and 7 persons were dead.

Nepal Red Cross Society distributed relief items to 956 families affected by the fire which benefited around 6,000 people.

Saptari district is the one worst affected by fire. The fire affected in 31 different locations of the district. Nepal Red Cross distributed non-food-relief –items (NFRI) to 243 families. Other districts affected by fire are Kapilvastu, Pachthar, Magdi, Bardia, Bara, Parsa, Jhapa, Okhaldhnga, Banke, Dhankuta, Gulmi, Taplujung, Arghakhachi, Morang, Manag and Rashuwa.

 Disaster management network in function RC volunteers mobilized in the west for humanitarian services

Rohani Dagaura, 75, and a resident of Khalyad-4, Kailali district was rescued with her other nine members of her family in a boat by the Red Cross volunteers from her roof top. After the flood hit her house and covered its walls, her whole family was bound to save life sitting on the roof top. The big flood in the Kandra River and water logging caused the whole village submerged under water. Like of her neighbors, the flood swept away all her belongings and crops. She is now taking a shelter under a tarpaulin provided by the Red Cross.

Monika Khatun, 70, has no more than her two daughters, a calf and in depth the memory of the regretful past. The hot sunny days of September pass under one bush or other at the bank of Koshi river looking after the calf. "Our poor but a small family was happy in Haripur village whereby the river flows", she sobs, "but it has become a story of the past." Like Khatun, about 6,500 families are living under emergency shelter in Saptari and more than 7,500 families in Sunsari district, the other side of the Koshi river. Only few of them believe that the river can take its original track of about two hundred years.
