Red Cross Society observed its 43rd
birth anniversary amidst various functions
on 4th September 2005. NRCS National
Headquarters and district branches
organized different programmes as
part of the celebration.
Speaking in a function organized
at the National Headquarters, Chairman
of the NRCS, Mr. Ramesh Kumar Sharma
recalled the glorious history of the
Society and acknowledged the contribution
of all whose efforts have brought
the Society to the present stage.
He also said the Society has become
successful in getting love of all
the people of the country because
of its inclusive and democratic nature.
Secretary General Mr. Dev Ratna Dhakhwa
highlighted on the major activities
and achievements of the NRCS. Central
Committee member Dr. Nageshwor Prasad
Singh called attention of all to work
with the experience of the past, challenge
of the present and responsibility
of the future.

Representative Ms. Karin Hakansson
Furga said that the Nepal Red Cross
has made a difference in the country
and also in other parts of the world.
Welcoming the guests and participants,
Executive Director Mr. Badri Khanal
highlighted the importance of the
day and said it is the day to remember
the past, reflect in the present and
plan for the future.
Ex-Executive Director Mr. Tirth Raj
Onta had his solo Red Cross postage
stamp exhibition on the occasion.
His collection had postage stamps
with Red Cross emblem from sixty countries.
Mr. Onta also handed over Rs. 10 thousand
cash to the NRCS Chairman as part
of his contribution to increase the
amount of the fund that he created
last year to award the best employee
of the NRCS. The fund has now the
total amount of Rs. 125 thousand.
As part of the celebration, Personnel
Welfare Fund of Nepal Red Cross Society
organized a blood donation camp in
the NRCS premises. 24 staff members
and others donated 24 pints of blood
on the occasion.

Chairman Mr. Sharma also gave away
prizes to the winners of the National
Essay Competition in the same function.
The competition was organized among
youths of up to 25 years of age to
raise their awareness on the issue
of non-discrimination and encourage
them fighting any type of discrimination
prevailing in the society.
42 essays from 24 districts of the
country were received in the competition.
Of the 42 competitors, Prakash Bhurtel
from Banepa, Kabhre bagged the first
prize. Likewise, Soniya Sharma from
Parbat and Kamal Koirala from Syangja
became second and third respectively.
Bikendra Dhakal from Surkhet was given
the consolation prize. The prize consisted
of cash and certificates. The first
prize winner, Prakash Bhutel, also
read his essay in the function.
