10th Condom Day was celebrated with a variety
of activities and much fanfare in Nepal
with the slogan "Lets use condom, it
is our responsibility" on 30th October
2004. Started in 1995 to raise awareness
on the use of condom, the Nepal Red Cross
Society coordinated the nationwide events
to mark the Condom Day as in earlier years.
More than 60 GOs, NGOs and INGOs like AIDS
and STDs Control Department/ HMG, Nepal
CRS Company, the PSI, and CEDPA participated
in celebrating the day.
Nepal Red Cross Society organized a seminar
on Challenges on Condom Promotion in Nepal
on 28th as the first event to mark the day.
Five different papers related to condom
promotion were presented on the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, Secretary General
of the Nepal Red Cross Society Dev Ratna
Dhakhwa said that these ten years of campaign
to promote condom use have been very encouraging.
More interesting segment of the celebration
remained the dohori geet (duet songs) presented
at the open theatre in the capital for three
days starting 28th of October. Renowned
folk singers sang throughout the days imparting
message on importance and use of condom.
On the 30th, a rally consisting of social
activists, students and Red Cross workers
went around the city and gathered at the
open theatre for a formal ceremony. Secretary
General of the Nepal Red Cross Society,
the International Federation Representative
Karin Hakansson Furga, and representatives
of other organizations working in the field
of HIV/AIDS and reproductive health addressed
the mass.
Nepal Red Cross district branches also
organized various activities to mark the
day. Folk songs, street dramas and rallies
were performed displaying placards and banners
with message on use of condom, HIV/AIDS
and related issues.
The public as well as the related activists
seemed to be more enthusiastic and involved
in this year's Condom Day. Journalists from
the neighbouring countries of India, Pakistan
and Sri Lanka were present to observe the
day. They said the event was quite unique
and quite result oriented.
Condom promotion has got an ample priority
from government as well as non-governmental
organizations for a few years keeping in
view the spreading threat of HIV/AIDS and
STIs. Nepal Red Cross Society has considered
this issue that needs to be further discussed
and disseminated. Likewise, Managing Director
of the Nepal CRS Company, a social marketing
company, Shankar Raj Padey opines that the
idea of use of condom in every sexual intercourse
has to be promoted. "That is how you
can eliminate the stigma attached to condom,"
he says.
