Red Cross Drinking Water and Sanitation
Program
The
Junior / Youth Red Cross Drinking
Water Programme has emerged
as a
leading activity of the NRCS.
Construction of drinking water
schemes and sanitary facilities
has been taking place through
this program since 1984, in
rewarding partnership with the
Japanese Red Cross Society.
This program has a focus on
schools and their nearby communities.
Water supply and sanitation
facilities are often insufficient
or non-existent in schools,
and poor sanitary practices
still exist throughout Nepal,
which makes school children
particularly vulnerable to disease.
This is a compelling reason
to utilize the Junior/Youth
Red Cross school network for
both sanitation awareness and
construction of appropriate
facilities.
The capacity building focus
of Nepal Junior/Youth Red Cross,
and its existence in the school
system, also helps to sustain
the services provided long term.
With appropriate resources
and empowerment, school children
have the ability to become agents
of change within their families
and thus mobilize the community
as a whole.
So far, the Junior/Youth Drinking
Water and Sanitation Programme
has helped 40 districts and
over 250,000 people.
