World AIDS Day was celebrated in Nepal

17th World AIDS Day was celebrated in Nepal on 1st December 2004. On the occasion, Nepal Red Cross Society organized various activities at central as well as district level apart from participating in national programmes of the organizations working in the field of HIV/AIDS.

NRCS volunteers and members actively participated in the rally organized by National Centre for AIDS & STDs Control (NCASC). The Society freely distributed IEC materials for raising awareness and combating HIV/AIDS. Similarly, condoms were distributed free at the NRCS stall. Video documentary and street dramas were also presented for educating people. Likewise, an orientation HIV/AIDS for NRCS officials was given at the national headquarters.

The NRCS members and volunteers also marked 17th World AIDS Day in various district chapters. Awareness raising for the prevention against this epidemic had been major focus of the programme. HIV/AIDS infected/affected people publicly put forward their ideas and reinforced the need for their support.

Nepal Red Cross Society has been active in Nepal for about a decade to limit the effects of the HIV/AIDS. The society has been carrying out awareness generation activities mainly through its youth volunteers through community-based participatory approaches. Peer education has become the major approach of transferring knowledge and skills among youths. Annually, some 150,000 young people and elderly members of the community receive information on HIV/AIDS.
